The Laboratory for Cell Research and Application (LBBK) of the Medical University of Warsaw offers three forms of services based on cells isolated from human and animal tissues:
1. The manufacturing of advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs)
As a certified laboratory with licenses, infrastructure, highly qualified staff and experience, we manufacture advanced therapy medicinal products (containing cells) in a form of:
- clinical trials, i.e. advanced therapy investigational medicinal products (ATIMP)
- custom medicinal product for a given patient, individually prescribed on doctor’s own responsibility, i.e. advanced therapy medicinal products - hospital exemptions (HE-ATMP)
We are currently manufacturing medicinal products based on Adipose Derived Stem Cells. The products are prepared for patients with three different medical indications: diabetic foot, scars and cutis laxa.
Under the permission of the Polish Minister of Health, we have possibility not only to collect and process human adipose tissue, but also to process, store and distribute human cells isolated from it.
We are on the list of Tissues and Cells Banks on the website of the National Center for Tissue and Cell Banking.
The material collected in our Bank meets the highest quality and safety standards, thus it can be used to prepare cell-based medicinal products for clinical use.

2. The Biobank, containing collections of cells of various origins for the scientific research use.
In our Biobank, we have collections of cells isolated from human and animal tissues, which can be used in various types of research, i.e. basic research, application research and pre- and clinical research.
The LBBK Biobank offers a wide range of services in the field of management of biological material collections. Our services include isolation, processing, storage and characterization, research services and sharing the collections.
As a member of the BBMRI.pl Consortium, the LBBK Biobank takes an active part in the implementation of the idea and principles of the European Research Consortium BBMRI-ERIC, of which Poland is a full member. 3. Research and Development
Taking advantage of belonging to one of the largest medical universities in Poland and the prestige of having the extensive practical experience of our experts, we conduct high quality scientific research in the in vitro cell culture conditions, at every stage of a project development, from experimental work to participation in clinical trials.
Our current research activities include:
- own R&D projects,
- R&D projects financed from domestic and European sources, in cooperation with leading scientific institutions in Poland
- clinical trials (the Central Register of Clinical Research Study number UR.DBL.BLE.474.0447.2017)

Our facility and technical resources
The LBBK is a complex of the ultra-modern laboratories with clean rooms of the A, B, C and D purity classes, which meet the requirements of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and PN-EN ISO 14644 standards.
The Quality Management System functioning in the laboratory has been based on the Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) requirements, ISO 9001 guidelines, the Regulations of the Polish Minister of Health on professional and sanitary requirements for tissue banks and the principles of Good Clinical Practice.

The Luminex® MAGPIX® Multiplexing System - the technology contained in the Luminex system enables simultaneous and multi-brand analysis of the tested sample. The system is based on measuring concentrations of many analytes simultaneously. The principle of operation of the device is based on the use of fluorescently labeled polystyrene or paramagnetic beads, which are a solid phase for antibodies or probes immobilized on their surface. This is the fastest technique that allows to create an accurate profile of the sample being tested, while maintaining high accuracy and repeatability of measurements. The system is mainly used as a more effective alternative to enzyme-linked immunosorbent tests.
The Syngene ™ G:BOX Chemi XX9 System - a top-class system designed for imaging and digital archiving of fluorescent and chemiluminescent labeled gels and blots, bio-luminescence, multiplexing and infrared (IR) photography. The device is mainly used for imaging gels after electrophoresis and membranes used in the Western-Blot. Thanks to the use of visualization technology in the IR light, it reduces autofluorescence and allows for multiplex detection of blots. In addition, the device has the most sensitive camera on the market with a real resolution of 9 million pixels, a 16-bit camera and GeneTools software.
The Biospherix X-vivo System - a modular system for conducting cell cultures under controlled conditions. Unlike conventional culture and processing of cells in the open-air incubators and laminar chambers, it allows for a full control of the in vitro culture conditions. It offers the ability to grow cells in an aseptic environment with a controlled concentration of gases: CO2 (in the range of 1-20%) and O2 (in the range of 0.1-95%) in an environment of 37 °C. The device is used to study the impact of low O2 concentration on cells, i.e. hypoxia.
The HITACHI TM-3000 scanning electron microscope - a device, in whichyou can i.a. observe cells and tissues on the surfaces opaque to visible light under magnifications up to 30,000 times. The microscope operates in the BSE (backscattered electrons) mode and allows for the observation of biological objects even without the need for conductive coatings. For better image quality, a spray with conductive elements can be used– we have sprayers for spraying with coal or precious metals.
The Nikon Eclipse Ti inverted fluorescence microscope is one of the most technologically advanced microscopes on the market. Automation in the microscope enables speed, repeatability and greater efficiency of research. The microscope can be used in bright field and fluorescence techniques. It is equipped with temperature, humidity and gas composition control systems. Thanks to that, this device can provide stable, fully controlled ambient conditions, which gives the possibility of imaging cells during culture.
The modern CytoFLEX flow cytometer from Beckman Coulter with the CytExpert software, equipped with three lasers: blue 488nm, red 638nm and violet 405nm, enables the analysis of 13 color markers. That device is characterized by high sensitivity and gives the possibility of quantitative and qualitative physicochemical and biological measurements of cells and particles.
The 7500 Fast Real-Time System thermal cycler is a device which allows for performing both quantitative and qualitative determinations in the real time. The 96-well plate format and the speed of thermal cycles ensure high performance in a very short time. The wide spectrum of calibrated dyes increases the possibility of reagents used in experiments and allows for multiplexing.
The Tecan's multifunctional Spark plate reader is the latest instrument that provides fast, sensitive and flexible testing. The device is equipped with the function of measuring absorbance, fluorescence, loss of fluorescence over time and fluorescence polarization of biological samples. The reader works under the control of SparkControl software, which allows quick analysis of the obtained measurement data. Additional advantages of the Spark reader are the equipment with temperature and humidity regulators, gas supply, heater and stirrer as well as a cell counter that ideally are successful in cell culture research. The latest technologies used have ensured the reader is intended for the most advanced scientific experiments.
The NanoDrop 2000 from Thermo Scientific is a UV-Vis spectrophotometer for rapid analysis of RNA, DNA and proteins in small volumes.
