Exploitation of regenerative potential of mesenchymal stem cells
Project co-financed by the National Center for Research and Development under the Strategic Programme "PREVENTION PRACTICES AND TREATMENT OF CIVILIZATION DISEASES - STRATEGMED"
The goal of the project
The goal of this project is to direct the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells in the bone and cartilage direction in order to accelerate the healing and rehabilitation of patients, after orthopedic, dental and neurological operations.
The way of implementation
The extensive multi-faceted knowledge of consortium members and extensive experience in scientific work are aimed at establishing protocols for high yield harvesting, optimization of cell culture conditions, including low oxygen environment as well as safe, clinically applicable cell engineering, will be pivotal to substantially maximize their therapeutic potential.
What distinguishes the Explore Me project from other research grants is the combination of several medical specialties and veterinary medicine with the regenerative potential of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC). The project is carried out at two levels. The scientific side of the project is represented by research to develop methods for the differentiation of stem cells towards muscle, bone and cartilage, the use of molecular engineering to modify mesenchymal stem cells using mRNA, and to study the potential of MSC cells in large animal models. The practical side of this project is represented by clinical trials in which, for the first time in Poland, stem cells will be used to improve bone union in patients operated for scoliosis, for stroke treatment, reconstruction of the anterior knee ligament, regeneration of cartilage in the knee and bones for dental implants.
